UNDERSTANDING THE CATEGORY C LICENCE

Category C is the most widely used HGV licence in the UK. Rigid vehicles can access urban areas and smaller roads that larger vehicles cannot, making Category C drivers in demand across a broad range of sectors including logistics, retail distribution, construction and waste management.

Starting salaries for Category C drivers typically range from £28,000 to £44,000 per year, with earning potential increasing with experience and additional licence categories.

Easy As HGV provides a fully managed Category C HGV training service, coordinating the entire process on your behalf. From your provisional licence application through to theory revision support, test booking, practical training and job search assistance, we handle it all. Once qualified, our recruitment team connects you with employers and agencies actively looking for Category C HGV drivers across the UK.

Category C Course Questions

Find answers to the most common questions about training requirements and what happens next

What do I need before I can start Category C (Class 2) training?

To start Category C training you need to be 18 or over, hold a full UK car licence, pass an HGV medical, and pass the HGV theory test. No previous lorry experience or C1 licence is required.

Once you've passed your medical, a provisional Category C entitlement is added to your licence, and you can then book the theory test. Practical training only begins after theory is passed. Easy As HGV coordinates each of these steps in order, so nothing holds up your training dates.

The HGV medical is a short 20 to 30 minute check of your eyesight, blood pressure and general health, and most people pass it without any problems. A managed medical condition doesn't automatically rule you out.

The doctor asks about conditions such as diabetes, epilepsy, heart problems and sleep apnoea, then completes a D4 form that goes to the DVLA with your provisional licence application. If you have a condition the DVLA will want more information on, our advisors can explain what's needed before you book.

The Category C theory test has two parts: a 100-question multiple-choice test (pass mark 85) and a hazard perception test of 19 video clips (pass mark 67 out of 100). Both must be passed before practical training starts.

The two parts are booked and sat separately at a DVSA test centre. If you intend to drive for a living you'll also sit the Driver CPC Module 2 case studies test at the same stage. Easy As HGV includes theory revision support so you go in prepared rather than relying on a quick read of the highway code.

Yes. A Category C licence lets you drive a rigid lorry over 3.5 tonnes, but to be paid to drive one you also need a Driver CPC qualification. Without it you can hold the licence but not work as an HGV driver.

For new drivers, Driver CPC means passing Module 2 (case studies) and Module 4 (a practical demonstration test) alongside your licence tests. You then keep it valid with 35 hours of periodic training every five years. Our Category C package can include Initial CPC so once you have passed your license you are qualified to get into work.

Yes, you can train for a Category C+E licence directly from a car licence. Since November 2021 you no longer need to pass Category C first, though many drivers still start with Category C because it's quicker and opens up more first jobs.

Category C is the licence most local delivery, construction and distribution employers ask for, so it gives you the widest choice when you're newly qualified. If you're set on articulated work from the start, our Fast Track Cat C & C+E course covers both in one programme. Our advisors can help you weigh up which route fits the jobs you're aiming for.
